Amazon.com The war against Japan was waged not merely at sea, but in the skies of the Pacific. The U.S. Navy's carrier-based planes bombed and strafed enemy ships and shore bases, and supported amphibious landings. They served as the vanguard of the advance, a fact recognized early on by commanders: the loss of a single carrier could change the complexion of the war. Featured on this DVD are four rare films made by and for the U.S. Navy during WWII. They include the amazing Edward Steichen film "The Fighting Lady", a stunning color documentary that follows the second USS Yorktown in Pacific combat in 1944. The extraordinary film remains one of the most important documents of the air-sea war in the Pacific. Also on this DVD, Life and Death of the USS Hornet, which profiles the carrier which struck Japan in 1942 and fought at Midway, but which was sunk a short time later at Santa Cruz. Also included is Brought to Action, which shows the tumultuous American victory at Leyte, and a short film about the air assault that smashed Japan's fortress island Truk in 1944. Digitally remastered and restored from original 16mm prints. Please note: because of the age and rarity of these films, image and sound quality may vary.

Customer Reviews: The Fighting Lady Deluxe Edition featuring the USS YorktownJanuary 17, 2009 James B. Berry(Shreveport, LA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My father was a plank owner from the commissioning of the second USS Yorktown CV-10 in 1943. He and his shipmates endured ten naval battles in the Pacific theatre onboard the Yorktown to the end of World War II. This presentation has more actual combat footage of the Yorktown that I have ever found available. The transfer of video, and audio to DVD is very clean.
