The battle of Iwo Jima had some of the most fiercest fighting of the Pacific war. Japan considered it their last large island stronghold and the Japanese soldiers were told to defend it to the death. Surrender was not an option and that is why there were so few Japanese Iwo Jima survivors. There were 21000 Japanese soldiers on the island and when the battle was over only 216 had been taken prisoner. The others died in battle or committed suicide.
There is a lot of history that goes into the taking of Iwo Jima and the Raising of the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi. That historical picture shows US troops raising old blue on one the heavily defended Japanese strongholds in the Pacific.
